Pseudogamy

See gynogenesis

Pseudogamy is a term used in aquarophilia to describe sexual behavior in certain aquarium fish which resembles reproduction by sexual reproduction, but which does not produce viable offspring. This can happen when a male and a female of the same species mate and seem to mate up as they would normally, but do not produce fertilized eggs.

Pseudogamy can be caused by several factors, such as hormonal problems, inadequate environmental conditions or the presence of non -reproductive fish in the aquarium. In some cases, pseudogamy can also be the result of the presence of hybrid fish, that is to say fish from coupling between individuals of different species, who are not able to reproduce.

It is important to note that pseudogamy is not exclusive to aquarium fish and can also occur in other animals, including birds and mammals. However, it is more common in aquarium fish because of their reproduction often dependent on specific environmental conditions and the presence of non -reproductive fish in aquariums.

To avoid pseudogamy in an aquarium, it is important to maintain an adequate environment for reproduction, to ensure that the reproductive fish are in good health and to carefully select the species of fish to be included in the aquarium. It is also recommended not to mix different fish species in a single aquarium, as this can lead to the production of hybrid fish which are unable to reproduce.
