Subspecies

Subgroup of a species, generally separated geographically from other populations thereof.

The subspecies is a taxonomic concept which makes it possible to classify individuals of a species in distinct groups within this same species. We speak of subspecies when there are significant morphological, genetic or behavioral differences between these groups, which distinguish them from the typical form of the species.

For example, in the field of aquarophilia, there are several subspecies of clownfish, such as the percula amphiprion, the Ocellaris amphiprion or the polymnus amphiprion. Each of these subspecies has its own characteristics, such as the color of their side strip, the shape of their caudal fin or their reproductive behavior.

It is important to note that the notion of subspecies is relatively vague and subject to debate in the world of taxonomy. Indeed, there is no precise definition of what a subspecies is, and there can be differences in opinion between scientists as to the way of determining them. This largely depends on the variability observed within the species and the way in which this variability is interpreted.

In aquarophilia, it is often difficult to determine with precision to which subspecies belongs to a fish, because the characteristics which distinguish them can be subtle and difficult to observe. This can also depend on the region of origin of the fish and the environment in which it has lived.

It is also important to note that the notion of subspecies is often used in an improper way in the world of aquarophilia, and that it is common to see fish labeled as belonging to a certain subspecies while in Reality, they do not meet the scientific criteria necessary to be classified in this way. This may be due to an ignorance of the classification criteria or a desire to give added value to a fish by presenting it as a rare or prized subspecies.
