Description

Very elongated body with cylindrical section. Several particularities distinguish this species. It is deprived of ventral and anal fins while the dorsal is divided into a series of pinenules, most often folded. The second characteristics and due to the fact that the reed fish absorbs the air directly on the surface of the water. It takes a lot of hiding places to this fish !!! Rocks, roots, ... attention, predatory fish .. night, and hidden the day ... not to put with small species !!!!!

Calamoichthys calabaricus fish, also known as the globe fish, is a freshwater fish from Niger and the Cross river in Nigeria. It is a small fish, generally measuring between 10 and 15 cm long, with a rounded shape and a wide head. Its skin is covered with small smooth and shiny scales, generally gray-green in color with darker spots on the back and sides.

Globic fish is mainly a background fish, spending most of its time hiding in herbs and aquatic plants looking for food. It feeds mainly on insects, molluscs and crustaceans, which it captures using its long oral barbels to search the substrate. Globic fish is also known to be a good swimmer and can sometimes be seen swimming on the surface to capture insects in flight.

Globic fish is a gregarious fish and is often in a group, grouping together in benches to eat and protect themselves. The males are generally more colorful than females, with larger and more colorful fins. The reproduction period generally occurs in spring, when males build nests in pebbles and aquatic herbs to attract females. The eggs are laid in the nests and are protected and fertilized by males until they hatch about a week later.

Globic fish is a common fish in its natural habitat and is not considered threatened. However, it is vulnerable to the disturbances of the habitat caused by human activity, such as pollution and destruction of aquatic ecosystems. It is also sometimes captured for human consumption or to be sold as aquarium fish.
