Leporinus octofasciatus (Leporinus with red fins)

Description

Leporinus octofasciatus is a freshwater fish belonging to the Anostomidae family. It is a relatively large fish, reaching about 30 centimeters in length. Its most remarkable characteristic is the presence of eight longitudinal strips of bright color which run along its body. These strips can be white, yellow or orange, and contrast with the dark background of its dress, which can vary from gray to brown.

Leporinus octofasciatus has a large and square head, with large eyes and a protractile mouth, which allows it to easily capture its prey. It also has two dorsal fins, a bifurcated caudal fin and two pectoral fins. Its anal fin is smaller than the other fins and is located above the base of the caudal fin.

Leporinus octofasciatus is an opportunistic fish that feeds on various prey, including insects, crustaceans, molluscs and smaller fish. He tends to eat in a group, gathering around abundant food sources and using his protractile mouth to capture his prey.

Leporinus octofasciatus is a gregarious fish that lives in large colonies in the shallow and slow waters of rivers, rivers and lakes from South America. He prefers water rich in vegetation, where he can hide and protect himself from predators. It is also suitable for freshwater life, and can survive in waters with variable pH and hardness levels.

In terms of reproduction, leporinus octofasciatus is an oviparous fish. Females lay their eggs in aquatic vegetation, where they are fertilized by males. The eggs hatch in about five days, and the fry look like smaller and transparent versions of their adult parents. The fry grows quickly and reach sexual maturity in about a year.
