Betta splendens (Fighter)

Betta splendens (Fighter)

Description

The Betta Splendens is a popular fish for the aquarophilia, also known as the Siam fighter or as a Soufflerfish. It is from the shallow waters of the flooded plains of Southeast Asia, in particular Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. Betta Splendens is a surface fish that lives mainly in plant aquatic environments, such as rice fields and canals.

The Betta Splendens is a lonely fish that can reach an adult size of about 6 centimeters. The males are generally more colorful than females, with colors ranging from blue to red through green, black and purple. Their fins are long and elegant, with shapes back, croissant and in fan. The males also have an enlarged backbone, called a gonopod, which allows them to fight with other males for the territory and the females.

The Betta Splendens is a carnivorous fish that feeds mainly on small insects, larvae and crustaceans. They have the unique ability to breathe atmospheric air thanks to an organ located in their heads, called a labyrinth. This allows them to survive in shallow and oxygen -poor aquatic environments, but it also means that they should not be maintained in too small aquariums or without access to air.

The Betta Splendens is a fragile fish and must be maintained in appropriate conditions to avoid diseases. They must be held in an aquarium with a minimum of 10 liters of water, with a temperature of 22 to 28 degrees Celsius and a pH between 6.5 and 7.5. They should not be maintained with other aggressive or larger than them, because it can stress them and compromise their health.
