Distichodus decemmaculatus (Dwarf distichodus)
Description
Peaceful, suitable for any aquarium with calm fish, not too large, but take into account its need for plant food. In adults, the ventral region, from the side line to the lower belly, is foam green. The fins are red.
Distichodus decemamaculatus is a freshwater fish that belongs to the Cityrinidae family. This fish is from West Africa, where it lives mainly in rivers and lakes. It can reach a size of 60 centimeters and weighs approximately 1.5 kilogram.
Distichodus decemmaculatus has a distinctive characteristic that differentiates it from other fish: it has two rows of teeth in the mouth. The first row is formed of knife -shaped teeth, while the second row is made up of smaller and more pointed teeth. These teeth allow it to feed on different types of food, including smaller fish, crustaceans, plants and invertebrates.
Distichodus decemmaculatus has an elongated body covered with smooth scales. Its color varies from dark gray to olive, with darker spots which give it a spotted appearance. The head of the fish is wide and rounded, with globular eyes which allow it to see in all directions. The dorsal fin is located far from the head, which allows it to maintain a good balance in water.
Distichodus decemamaculatus is a lonely fish that lives mainly in shallow waters, near banks and islands. It is active during the day and feeds mainly at night. It can be territorial and be aggressive towards the other fish approaching its territory.
Distichodus decemamaculatus is a fish that reproduces during the rainy season. The female can lay up to 60,000 eggs which she place on aquatic plants or on the rocks. The eggs hatch approximately 48 hours after laying, and the fry are independent from birth.
