Description

Greek fish, peaceful, to be raised alone. Strictly herbivore. For large community aquariums without vegetation.

Distichodus sexfasciatus is a freshwater fish from Africa. It belongs to the Cityinidae family and is also known as the African or fish-catfish of the Nile.

This fish is characterized by its elongated body and laterally compressed, with well -developed ventral and pectoral fins and relatively small dorsal and anal fins. Its color varies from gray to dark brown, with dark longitudinal strips on the body. Distichodus sexfasciatus can reach a length of 40 to 60 centimeters and a weight of up to 2.5 kilograms.

This fish is mainly herbivorous, but it can also feed small animals such as insects and crustaceans. It is generally found in the calm and shallow waters of rivers, lakes and marshes, where it feeds on aquatic plants and algae. The distichodus sexfasciatus is a gregarious fish which often gathers in large benches to feed and reproduce.

Reproduction of the Distichodus Sexfasciatus generally occurs during the rainy season, when the waters are high and the climatic conditions favorable. Females can lay up to a million eggs at a time, which are fertilized by males and deposited on aquatic plants where they hatch in a few days. The frys are very small and feed mainly on plankton until they reach sufficient size to feed on plants.

The Distichodus Sexfasciatus is a common fish in Africa, where it is widely used as a source of food and trade. However, its population recently decreased due to the degradation of its natural habitat and the overexploitation by fishermen. It is also considered an invasive species in certain regions, where it can cause damage to local ecosystems. Because of these factors, the Distichodus Sexfasciatus is currently considered a vulnerable species by the International Union for Nature Conservation (IUCN).
