Gnathanodon speciosus (Valet)
Description
The silver copper tint body emits gold reflections. The pectoral fins are yellow. The body of the jack, over its entire length, is crossed vertically by nine to twelve bands (depending on the individual) of dark brown color, including a subvertal on the eye. In more aged individuals, the colors are dull.
The Gnathanodon Speciosus is a fish from the carangid family, also known as "sword fish" due to its long dorsal fin which gives it the appearance of a sword. This fish is native to the warm waters of the Indian and peaceful oceans, where it is mainly nourished by crustaceans and small fish.
Gnathanodon Special is a large fish, often reaching a length of 60 centimeters or more. It has an elongated and slender body, with a wide head and prominent eyes. His skin is covered with smooth and shiny scales, which can vary in silver gray color to blue-green depending on the environment in which he lives. Its dorsal fin, which gives it its characteristic appearance, consists of a long row of rigid and pointed rays.
Gnathanodon Special is a solitary and suspicious fish, which generally lives alone or in small groups. It moves slowly by swimming thanks to its pectoral fins, and it uses its dorsal fin to maintain its balance and change direction quickly. He is also able to jump out of the water to catch his prey in flight.
Due to its imposing size and speed, Gnathanodon Speciosus is a formidable predator in its natural environment. It feeds mainly on crustaceans such as shrimp and crabs, as well as small fish which it catches by swimming at their speed. It can also feed on dead fish which it finds floating on the surface of the water.
Gnathanodon Special is a protected fish in many regions of the world because of its beauty and importance in the marine ecosystem. Unfortunately, it is also threatened by excessive fishing and pollution of the oceans, which have caused a decrease in its population in certain regions.
