Sargocentron spinifer (Large Machoires)
Description
Certainly the largest of Sargocentrons. The morphology of this species is close to that of S. Cornus. The distinctive characteristics of this species are the large size reached by adults, but also the total absence of drawings on the body. The fundamental coloring is uniformly orange red.
Sargocentron spinifer fish is a reef fish from the Order of Perciforms, from the Holocentridae family. It is commonly called the sea sword or the spiniferous sword fish due to the elongated shape of its head and its long backbone. Spiniferous sword fish can measure up to 30 cm in length and is generally pale or gray yellow in color with dark horizontal stripes. It has two dorsal fins, one composed of thorns and the other of soft rays, as well as an anal fin and a caudal bifide.
Spiniferous swords feeds mainly on small fish, crustaceans and molluscs which it hunts in coral reefs. It is mainly active at night and can be territorial towards other fish in its species. Spinifère sword fish is also known for its ability to change color to camouflage itself in its environment.
Spiniferous sword fish is mainly present in the warm waters of the Indian and peaceful oceans, especially around the islands of French Polynesia, the Cook Islands and the Samoa Islands. It can be found in coral reefs up to a depth of 50 meters.
