The gymnothorax flavimarginatus is a fish from the Muraenidae family, commonly known as "yellow border-border". It is a relatively large fish, up to a length of about 70 cm. Its color is mainly gray, with dark spots all over the body. The gymnothorax flavimarginatus is characterized by a yellow strip that runs along the edges of its fins and its tail.

The gymnothorax flavimarginatus is a nightfield that lives mainly in tropical and subtropical waters, to depths up to around 100 meters. It is often found in coral reefs and underwater caves, where it feeds mainly on crabs, shrimp and molluscs.

The gymnothorax flavimarginatus is a lonely fish that only interacts with other individuals to reproduce. Reproduction generally occurs during the rainy season, when females release their eggs in the water. The males ensure the fertilization of the eggs and watch over the eggs until they hatch. Young angels are very similar to adults, but have more vivid colors and a more pronounced yellow strip.

The gymnothorax flavimarginatus is considered to be a beneficial reef fish, as it contributes to maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems by feeding on crabs and other animals considered harmful to coral reefs. However, it is also considered a fish edible by humans and can therefore be caught for consumption.

Due to its beauty and rarity, the Flavimarginatus gymnothorax is also sought after by collectors of aquarium fish. However, its nightlife and its tendency to hide in caves and reefs can make it difficult to maintain captivity. It is therefore important to ensure that the living conditions in captivity are adapted to its needs to guarantee its survival and well-being.
