Hemipteronotus taeniourus (Masked labre)
Description
The juveniles are green speckled with white, with a highly compressed body laterally. At the adult age, the great development of the two first rays of the dorsal fin fades and this fish has a green green color.
The Hemipteronotus Taeniourus fish is a freshwater fish native to rivers and streams from South America. It is a small fish, generally measuring between 6 and 10 cm in length. It has an elongated and flattened body, with a wide head and a protractile mouth, which allows it to easily feed small crustaceans and invertebrates.
The Hemipteronotus Taeniourus has a grayish or brown coloring on top, with darker vertical strips on the body. The belly is generally lighter, with irregular black and brown spots. The caudal fin is branched off, allowing it to quickly move around in the water.
The Hemipteronotus Taeniourus is a lonely fish which generally lives alone or in small groups in shallow and not very common waters. It is active mainly at night and feeds mainly on small invertebrates which he finds by searching the bottom of the water with his protractile mouth.
Due to its small size and shyness, the Hemipteronotus Taeniourus is not very popular as a company Animal, although it can be maintained in an aquarium if it is provided with adequate habitat and care appropriate. However, it is generally preferable to leave these fish in their natural environment, where they can prosper safely.
