Nannocharax occidentalis (Western African Fishfish)
Description
The Westernalis nannocharax is a freshwater fish from West Africa. It measures approximately 3.5 centimeters in length and is characterized by an elongated body and a blue-green color with brown spots on the top.
The Westernalis nannocharax is a gregarious fish that lives in groups in the shallow waters of rivers and lakes. It feeds mainly on small crustaceans and insects which it captures using its fins to dig into the sand or the mud.
Western Nannocharax is a peaceful fish that generally does not pose a problem for other species. However, it can be territorial when it reproduces, the males sometimes fighting for the control of Frai sites.
Western Nannocharax is reproduced in rainy times, when water levels increase and conditions are ideal for reproduction. Females lay hundreds of eggs that they attached to solid surfaces such as submerged leaves or branches. The eggs hatch about a week later and the fry are independent from birth.
Due to its small size and rapid reproduction, western Nannocharax is considered an abundant species in its natural habitat.
