Neolamprologus caudopunctatus is a relatively small fish, generally measuring between 5 and 6 cm in length. It has an elongated and side compressed body, with a sharp head and long and thin fins. Its color varies from gray to dark brown, with lighter spots on the belly and black vertical lines along the body.

Neolamprologus caudopunctatus is a gregarious fish, which means that it lives in groups with other fish from its species. These groups can understand up to a hundred fish, each occupying a well -defined territory in which they feed, reproduce and protect each other. Neolamprologus caudopunctatus is a territorial and aggressive fish, which will fiercely defend its territory against intruders, including fish from its species.

Dimorphism

The male always presents a very fine yellow reader at the end of the caudal fin, this listed being always absent in the females.

Reproduction

The territory of each couple consists of a stone, on the edge of a sandy area. The fish dig under this stone to form a cave whose opening is the size of the occupants. The laying takes place on the ceiling. After a week, the tiny fry appear, closely monitored by parents, the male taking care of the distant defense and the female of close defense. At the slightest alert, all these little people enters the hiding place to come out a few minutes later by forming a "cloud" which evolves in front of the entrance. The frys are 30 to 50 per laying.
