Notopterus chitala (Knife fish)

Notopterus chitala (Knife fish)

Description

The Notopterus Chitala is a freshwater fish belonging to the Notopteridae family. It is also known as the Indian or Indian Oise fish fish because of its elongated shape and its dorsal fin fin. The Notopterus Chitala is from rivers and lakes from India, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

The Notopterus Chitala can reach a size of 40 to 60 centimeters long and weighs on an average of about 1 kilogram. Its color varies from gray to dark brown, with lighter spots along the sides and a dark strip along the side line. Its dorsal fin is long and thorny, while its caudal fin is smaller and rounded.

The Notopterus Chitala is an omnivorous fish, that is to say that it feeds on plants and small animals. In the wild, it is mainly nourished by crustaceans, fish, molluscs and insect larvae. In captivity, it can be nourished with fish pellets, living or frozen foods, as well as cooked vegetables.

The Notopterus Chitala is a gregarious fish, that is to say that it tends to live in a group. It is generally peaceful and can be maintained with other species of fish, provided that these are not too small to be considered as food. The Notopterus Chitala can also be maintained in a community aquarium, but it is recommended to provide it with a space large enough for it to be able to swim freely.

The Notopterus Chitala is a relatively easy -to -maintain fish in aquarium. It needs an aquarium of at least 100 liters, equipped with a filter and heating to maintain a water temperature between 22 and 28 degrees Celsius. The aquarium must be fitted out so as to offer him hiding places and plants to hide and rest. The Notopterus Chitala is a relatively robust fish, but it is sensitive to temperature fluctuations and water quality variations. It is therefore important to maintain the clean aquarium and regularly check the water settings.
