Ostraction cornutus (Yellow)

Description

It can be adopted by nourishing it in hand. With a little time he comes to eat.

Ostraction Cornutus fish, also known as horned moon fish or horns fish, is a freshwater fish native to South America. It is a fleshy fish with a wide head and a protuberant mouth. Its most distinctive characteristic is the presence of two long horns on the top of its head, which can reach up to 10 cm in length. These horns are used by fish to defend themselves against predators and can also be used to dig holes in the bottom of the water to hide.

The cornutus ostraction fish has a generally gray or brown coloring with black or brown spots on the body. The tail is often barred with white and black. The upper part of the body is covered with small scales, while the lower part is naked and membranous. The total length of the fish can reach up to 30 cm, although most specimens are approximately 20 cm long.

Cornitus ostraction fish is generally considered a lonely and territorial fish. He lives mainly in the shallow waters of rivers and lakes, where he feeds mainly on aquatic plants and algae. Cornu moon fish can also feed on small crustaceans and aquatic insects. The fish is generally active at night and rests during the day in its hole or under rocks or submerged roots.

Ostraction Cornutus fish is a fairly easy reproductive fish to raise captivity. Reproduction is generally done during the rainy season, when the waters of rivers and lakes are warmer and richer in oxygen. The female can lay up to 1000 eggs, which are deposited on the bottom of the water and fertilized by the male. The fry usually hatch after a few days and are starting to feed on plankton.

The Ostraction Cornutus fish is a popular fish in the aquarophilia, due to its relatively small size and its easy adaptation to life in captivity. However, it can be aggressive towards other fish and must therefore be maintained in a separate aquarium.
