Description

The paraphago rostratus is a freshwater fish that belongs to the Cyprinidae family. It measures on average between 8 and 10 cm long and has an elongated body and laterally compressed. Its color varies from gray to dark brown, with lighter spots on the back and sides. The rostratus paraphago has a small mouth located in the lower position and it has short ventral and pectoral fins.

The paraphago rostratus is a gregarious fish that lives in a group in running waters and shallow rivers. It feeds mainly on invertebrates, aquatic plants and small crustaceans. Paraphago rostratus is a peaceful fish and can be easily kept in community aquarium with other peaceful species.

The paraphago rostratus is an oviparous fish, that is to say that it lays eggs that hatch and give rise to larvae. Reproduction generally takes place during spring and summer period. Females lay their eggs on aquatic plants or pebbles, where they are fertilized by males.

Due to its small size and its gregarious behavior, the paraphago rostratus is often confused with other species of cyprinids, including the Brachydanio RERIO (Zero Fish) and the Danio RERIO (Fish-surgeian). However, it is easily recognizable thanks to its dark color and its light spots on the back and sides.
