Phractocephalus hemiliopterus (Phracto)

Adult size100 cm

Description

The phractocephalus hemiliopterus, also known as tetra hemiliopter or catfish in Senegal, is a freshwater fish from West Africa. It is characterized by its imposing size, often reaching 40 cm long, as well as by its pectoral dorsal and ventral fins, which are particularly developed and allow it to propel themselves with agility. The hemiliopter tetra has a silver gray color on the back and belly, with black spots on the sides and a dark strip that crosses the body on each side.

The phractocephalus hemiliopterus is a lonely and territorial fish that needs a spacious aquarium to move and evolve. It is very active and can be seen constantly swimming in all directions, looking for food or exploring its environment. The hemiliopter tetra is an opportunistic predator that feeds mainly on small fish, crustaceans and insect larvae. It is also able to eat aquatic plants, which can be a problem in a planted aquarium if you don't take care to choose robust plants.

Phractocephalus hemiliopterus is an easy -to -keep fish in aquarium, but it needs a well -maintained environment to develop properly. The water must be clean and well filtered, and it is important to change part of the water regularly to avoid diseases. The hemiliopter tetra is generally compatible with other peaceful freshwater fish, but it can become aggressive with the specimens of its own species or with too small fish. In general, it is a fascinating and interesting fish to observe in an aquarium, which can bring life and color to an aquatic environment.
