Piabucus dentatus (Tetra Piabuco Denté)

Piabucus dentatus (Tetra Piabuco Denté)

Description

Piabucus dentatus fish is a freshwater fish belonging to the Cyprinidae family. It is from the current and stagnant waters of North America, in particular the Ohio River and its tributaries. This fish is known for its characteristic dentition, which has earned it its scientific name.

Piabucus dentatus measures an average of between 10 and 15 centimeters long, although some individuals can reach a larger size. It has an elongated body and compressed laterally, with a relatively large head and a terminal mouth. Its color is generally gray-greenish, with darker longitudinal strips on the back and sides. The pectoral and pelvic fins are transparent and the caudal fins are white.

The most notable characteristic of Piabucus dentatus is its dentition. Adult males have hook -shaped teeth at the front of the upper jaw, which allow them to hold the eggs during the Fraie. Females also have hook -shaped teeth, but they are smaller and less developed. Juveniles have smaller teeth, but they are still visible and their size increases with age.

Piabucus dentatus is an omnivorous fish that feeds mainly on aquatic insects, crustaceans and plants. Juvenile individuals feed mainly on algae and small invertebrates, while adults consume larger and varied prey. Fish generally reproduces in spring and summer, when the waters are hottest. Females lay hundreds of eggs that are retained by males thanks to their hook -shaped teeth. The fry was born a few days later and begin to feed immediately.

Piabucus dentatus is a common fish in its natural habitat, although it can be threatened by pollution and changes under hydrological conditions. It is also sometimes taken by fishermen, although its small size does not make it very attractive for sports fishing. In general, Piabucus dentatus is considered a species at low risk of extinction.
