Description

The body strongly flattened laterally, is in the shape of a disc, enhanced by extremely developed dorsal and anal fins. Black vertical strips steal the body over its entire height, but there are also species whose body is entirely black without any brand.

Pterophyllum scalare fish is a freshwater fish belonging to the cichlid family. We also know him under the name of freshwater parrot or even ancestor fish. It is originally from the alternative waters of South America, more precisely in the region of the Orenoque and Amazonas rivers, where it is mainly in stagnant and shallow waters.

The pterophyllum scalare has an elongated and flattened shape, with a veil -shaped tail and very developed pectoral and ventral fins. Its color varies according to individuals, but it is generally silver gray or brownish with stains or lines in the shape of lines or points. The Angel Fish also has dorsal and caudal fins decorated with long colored stripes, which give it a very spectacular appearance.

The pterophyllum scalare is a gregarious and social fish, which likes to live in groups of several individuals in a well planted environment. It needs a spacious and well equipped aquarium to feel comfortable, with a water temperature between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius and a pH between 6 and 7.5. Angel is an omnivorous animal that feeds mainly on small crustaceans, insects and aquatic plants, but it can also appreciate some granules or living food from time to time.

Dimorphism

There is no notable sexual dimorphism, except during the Frai period when a couple has formed.

Reproduction

Very light water slightly acidic (pH 6.8) and reasonable hardness (DH 15 or even less). Procure a group of 6 young individuals of the same size, of different origin and make them grow together until couples are training. During the laying period, the genital papilla of the female is more rounded. The couple lays on a sheet up to 1000 eggs per laying. Parents will take care of their offspring at birth. Plants with large leaves so that the eggs are placed on it. Parents ventilate and protect their eggs and fry.
