Scardinius erythrophthalmus (Rotengle)
Description
The Scardinius Erythrophthalmus, also known as Carassin d'Eau fresh or red carassin, is a freshwater fish which is mainly found in the stagnant and shallow waters of Europe and Asia. Its most striking characteristic is the bright red color of his eyes, hence his scientific name "Erythrophthalmus", which means "red eye" in Greek.
The body of the red carassin is elongated and compressed laterally, with a well developed dorsal fin and a smaller anal fin. The upper part of his body is gray or brown, with fine vertical stripes, while the lower part is white or pale yellow. The color of her eyes is variable, but she is often bright red, as mentioned above. The red carassin reaches about 20 centimeters in length and can weigh up to 200 grams.
The red carassin is an omnivorous fish which feeds mainly on aquatic plants, molluscs, insects and crustaceans. It reproduces in periods of Frai in April and May, by building a mud nest in which the female lays up to 10,000 eggs. The red carassin is considered an adaptable and prolific fish, which can colonize new environments easily and reproduce quickly.
The Red Cassess is a widely used species in Europe, where it is present in many countries, notably in France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Poland and Russia. It is also present in Asia, where it is present in China, Mongolia, North Korea and South Korea. The red carassin is widely used in aquaculture, because it is easy to raise and reproduce in captivity, and it is also prized for its flesh.
