Bodianus axillaris (Tamarind)

Bodianus axillaris (Tamarind)

Description

This species has an incredible transformation, at least for the males, between the juvenile and adult stage. They have half front of the colorful body of red-pourpre and the orange-yellow rear half. As for the females and the juveniles, they have the brown-red body of white, with black ocelli on the fins.

The Bodianus Axillaris is a fish belonging to the Labridae family, commonly known as yellow fins. It is from the tropical waters of the Indian and peaceful oceans and is mainly found in coral reefs. The Bodianus Axillaris has an elongated and flattened shape, with a body covered with scales. Its color varies from dark blue to the back of the body to a bright yellow at the front, with black and white spots on the side and on the fins. Its head is wide and flat, with round eyes and a mouth with sharp teeth.

The Bodianus axillaris is generally lonely or is in small groups, and it feeds mainly on small crustaceans and fish. It can reach a maximum size of about 30 cm, although most individuals measure approximately 20 cm. The reproduction of the Bodianus Axillaris occurs during the Frai period, when males and females gather in large groups to lay and fertilize the eggs.

The Bodianus axillaris is a popular fish in the aquariophilia and is often used to add color and life to coral reefs in aquarium. However, it can be territorial and can become aggressive towards other fish if its space is limited. Due to its popularity and demand for this species, the Bodianus Axillaris is now high in captivity to reduce pressure on wild populations.
