The exocochromis Auragenys is a freshwater fish from Malawi and Tanganyika lakes in East Africa. It is a cichlid fish, a group of fish known for their great diversity and their complex behavior. The exocochromis agenys is also known as "cichlide skull" because of its characteristic head -shaped head.
Adult fish is about 15 centimeters long and has a side compressed body with strong back and anal fins. Its color varies from silver gray to dark blue on the top, with a black vertical strip on the side and white or yellow dots on the lower part of the body. Pectoral and pelvic fins are often tinged with red.
The exocochromis Auragenys is a territorial fish and can become aggressive towards other fish, in particular fish from the same species. They are generally peaceful with other species, but can be aggressive towards smaller fish. They mainly feed on small crustaceans and plankton, although they can also eat commercial food for fish.
The exocochromis Anagenys is a monogamous fish, which means that it will not change a partner during his life. The males and females form stable couples and engage in nuptial parade behaviors to attract a partner. Once a couple is formed, the two fish dig a nest in the sand together to lay their eggs there. The male defends the nest against the intruders while the female incubates the eggs and takes care of the young fish once they have hatched.
Due to their territorial behavior and their need for a nesting space, the exocochromis Auragenys requires a medium or large aquarium with a substrate of sand and rocks or roots to offer them places to dig and hide . They must be kept in a group of several individuals, with a report of two females for each male to avoid aggressive behavior. They are sensitive to sudden changes in water parameters and require a filter and regular aquarium maintenance to maintain optimal living conditions.
