Leporinus nigrotaenia is a freshwater fish belonging to the Anostomidae family. It measures on average between 10 and 15 centimeters long and can reach up to 20 centimeters. Nigrotaenia leporinus has an elongated body and laterally compressed, with a wide head and a protractile mouth with yellow comb teeth. The basic color of her body is silver gray, with black spots dispersed on the back and flanks, as well as a black band that extends from the head to the tail.

Leporinus nigrotaenia is from rivers and lakes in the Amazon basin, in South America. It is very common in this region and is often considered as an invasive species in fresh waters. Leporinus nigrotaeniatus is an omnivorous fish that feeds mainly on plants, insects and crustaceans. He is also known to be a scavenger, that is to say that he eats the remains of dead fish and animal corpses.

Leporinus nigrotaenia is a relatively easy fish to raise in aquarium, even by beginners. However, it needs a spacious and well ventilated aquarium, with moderate temperature water (between 22 and 28 degrees Celsius) and good filtration. It is also important to maintain water at a slightly acidic pH, around 6.5 to 7.5. Leporinus nigrotaenia is generally peaceful with other aquarium species, but can be territorial with its congeners.

Leporinus nigrotaenia is a gregarious fish and needs to live in a group to feel safe. It is recommended to maintain at least six individuals in an aquarium so that they feel good. In captivity, Leporinus nigrotaenia can live up to five years if the maintenance conditions are optimal.
